The Nav Station’s origins were established in 1968 when Bill Rutherford founded Rutherford Marine Ltd. This bright new company took advantage of the increasing demand for trailer boats and marine engines as technology allowed for pleasure craft to become more accessible to New Zealand’s boating public. Rutherford Marine, based in Otahuhu, soon became one of New Zealand’s largest resellers of Sea Nymph Boats and subsequently expanded to Newmarket and continued to sell and service until the 1980s.
When the company was sold in 1984, Bill moved to Westhaven to specialise in Marine Electronics, Fishing and Safety Equipment under the name “Nav Station Ltd”. Over the years the retail focus has narrowed to concentrate on the ever expanding field of Marine Electronics. While basic staples of Radar, VHF radio and Depth Sounders still remain important to any vessel they have be joined by products such as GPS, AIS, Audiovisual Systems and Satellite Communications in the past 3 decades.
They say experience counts and after 45 years in most facets of the marine industry, including a stint as the Boating Industry Association President, Bill Rutherford can confidently claim that he has the knowledge to advise his clients on the correct product or service to fulfill their needs.
William Rutherford (Bill’s Son) is now the Sales Manager of the Nav Station, continuing the family tradition, and brings a new skill set to the company. He started working in boat chandlery in 1989 and moved into Marine Electronics in the mid 1990s.
